(Re-Tasted September 2007) … By all rights this wine should go into my lost and found column, because I unearthed it on my drink now rack; guess I had forgotten to drink it now. This is a tale for those who believe that rosés should be drunk early and young - I was one of those. When I found it I thought "uh-oh” – but always willing to pop the cork on anything, I decided to give it a go. It was lovely ... peach, pear and apple flavors with a very inviting nose - not at all what I expected it to be, now over three years from vintage day. Proving that you can't always trust your preconceived notions.
On occasion, I’ll take a wine I like and put it away in a “special box” for a few years to see how it will age … below you will read happened to those wines. On the other hand, there are wines that get “lost” in my wine cellar with nary a review ever written - some have turned into golden Treasures, others supreme Trash and then there are those that fall somewhere in-between (Tolerable). We’ll look at those here too. (New wines are being added all the time so keep coming back):

Erie Shore Vineyard 2001 Cabernet Franc-Zweigelt
(Found – January 2008)
I will fully admit that I waited too long with this one … finding it on the shelf in late December I knew it was probably past its prime, but waiting another month to drink it … that I can’t explain. If there is any good news to take away from this bottle is that it was corked, and therefore I never would have gotten the true flavours of the wine even if I tasted it in its prime. Soaking for as long as it did in the faulty cork the flavours and smells were just enhanced … the wine was ripe with wet newspaper and stewed prunes; and the taste was not much better. Looking at the bottle, now with the level of the wine at its shoulders, you could see the glass had become murky and cloudy. The wine itself looked more like a rosee, being almost completely see through. I gave the wine 30 minutes, an hour, then two hours to sit open, just to see if it would develop anything or blow off its stink … it did neither. Too bad, this one had some great potential in its youth and Erie Shore makes some great Franc. Lost + Found Rating: PURE TRASH.
